Job Outlook In The Construction Industry

January 11th, 2010 by downlock

There are excellent job opportunities present in the construction industry for workers who are very skilled. This is the result of the large number of retirement of such workers that has been anticipated over the next decade. The growth of the salaries in this sector is expected to rise to more than 10 percent by the year 2014. This rate of growth can be compared to the 14 percent that has been projected for all the other industries combined. The remodeling activity and quality of construction that are expected to grow in the coming years are being considered as the basis of employment in this sector.
The demand for residential construction will rise due to the increase in the areas that are growing very fast in the south and west. The demand for rental apartments and homes will increase all the more due to the rising numbers of immigrants, apart from the children of baby boomers. Additionally, a demand for large houses filled with more amenities will fuel the desire for move-up houses and indulgence in the expansion and remodeling of old houses. Condominiums and townhouses that are located conveniently in the urban and suburban settings will also become desired properties in the coming years.
Over the decade there will be a rise in employment in the non-residential construction sector. There has been a delay as far as the replacement of various industrial plants is concerned and there are a number of structures that need to be remodeled or replaced. There will be an increase in the need of nursing home construction as well as residential homes for the elders. Various health care facilities will also be needed and schools will have to be built in the West and South because the growth in population in these areas is ever increasing. However, more jobs will be created in the construction industry because of the need to remodel or renovate old schools in certain areas.
There is a projected growth in the civil and heavy engineering construction sector because of the increase in additional highways, street construction, bridges and the repairs and maintenance for preventing any further deterioration to the existing bridges and highways. Most of the voters and legislators in various states are approving the expenditure on construction of roads, which will result in more jobs in the next decade.
The largest segment within the construction industry is the specialty trade contracting and employment in this sector. These are expected to grow according to the growth in demand for subcontractors. Repair construction and improvement of houses will be taken on more than the building of new houses. As far as housing construction is concerned, remodeling will the fastest growing sector. Remodeling as compared to new construction is more labor intensive.
There might be a lot of fluctuations on an annual basis as far as job openings in construction industry are concerned. When the economy does not expand and when interest rates are high, new constructions cut back. With the growth of self-employment in this sector many managers are coming up with their own construction business on a small level.

How To Breakthrough The Glass Ceiling With Crystal Clear Content For The Search Engines

January 11th, 2010 by downlock

Writing with clarity nowadays is an elusive gift. Unnecessary words should be whittled away from sentences. Complex words should be dropped in favor of words that are simple and easy to comprehend. When you include a word that has no meaningful job to do in the sentence, it must be fired.
The chance of confusing your reader is increased manifold when meaningless words are employed. Many believe that the pompous jargon used today puffs them up and makes them look good. That is not entirely true; especially when their words cause confusion and throw the reader of the path.
Recently my bank upgraded their computer system. The letter they sent to me informing me of the impending change left me confused. I truly did not know what they were going to do. I knew that some change was coming. Your guess would have been as good as mine as to what that change was going to be.
Writing with clarity should be our goal. In order to achieve this we must free ourselves of clutter. That is a difficult task because clutter invades us at every turn. It takes the form of news, television, radio, cell phones, our partners, our children and even our jobs.
When we choose to clear ourselves of the clutter, it is then that we will begin to write clearly. A writer tied up in knots cannot produce clutter free writing. His writing will reflect his thinking.
What are you writing this article for anyway? Articles are written to be read. If your writing is littered with clutter, how do you expect your reader to simply follow along? Competing forces have assailed readers. Their attention span has been eroded to roughly thirty seconds. The job of the writer has increased in degree of difficulty.
It is unfair to say that the reader has become too busy to follow the plan of the article writer. Quite the contrary; it is usually the writer who has muddled the article to the point that the reader has been unable to follow the thread. Writers who attempt to impress are the ones who fit into this category.
A sentence may be so jam packed with fluff and meaningless words that the reader may take several meanings from that one sentence. Many times tenses get lost and the reader does not know who is speaking. Sometimes a sentence with no apparent contextual meaning is dropped into the middle of a paragraph; and stands out like a sore thumb.
At times all that is needed to avoid confusion is a dictionary. A normal dictionary would assist with incorrect word usage if it was used. When a reader encounters this type of carelessness they usually go over what they read.
They believe that they have misunderstood something. But no, lo and behold an incorrect word was used. As a writer, you are now irritating your reader. They will not put up with your sloppiness for long.
At the completion of every sentence writers must jog themselves back to life and ask, what am I trying to convey to my reader? If the answer is fuzzy, then what you have written is also fuzzy. If the answer is clear, then the next question must be have I in fact said it clearly. Can a novice clearly understand what I have just written?
Article writers must literally force themselves to write clearly. If they want to write with clarity they must work hard at it. One does not merely stumble upon a clear sentence. When one reads a clear sentence, it generally means that someone has worked hard.

How To Handle The Anxiety Of The Post-Interview Period

January 11th, 2010 by downlock

The sense of relief and excitement following a job interview often gives way to the anxiety of waiting to hear back from hiring managers. Graduate professionals often have to wait days or weeks to find out whether they got their dream job or not. While many graduates are content to ride the stress of this period out and wait for news, there are a few important steps that should be taken in the post-interview period to ease anxiety.
Within two days of the interview, graduate professionals should send a thank you note to the hiring manager and interviewers for the open position. Whether it is by email or a hand written note sent by post, graduates can show their appreciation for the interviewer’s time and energy in a personal way. Thank you notes not only show the appreciation of graduates but also help maintain contact with hiring managers.
Along with a thank you note, graduates should not be afraid to maintain contact with the interviewers in the days following the interview. Companies often encourage applicants to maintain contact in order to answer any questions about the decision making process or deal with concerns about the interview. Regular contact can be an email or phone call once or twice after the interview to express continued interest, ask any questions about the process, and learn if there has been a change in timing for the hiring decision.
While it may be tempting to constantly contact interviewers and others at the hiring company, graduates need to exhibit patience following the interview. Sending too many notes or asking too many questions can put off an interviewer, who has other job responsibilities. Graduates should go along with their usual daily routine, find an activity that keeps their mind off of the job, and let the process work itself out.
Graduates should not be afraid to continue their job search following the completion of an interview. While it may feel strange to continue pursuing other work opportunities after interviewing for a great job, graduates need to keep their options open. Graduates need to cast their net wide to ensure that they have more than one job option in case they don’t receive their dream job. A great way of ensuring that the anxiety of the interview doesn’t give away to the anxiety of not having a steady job is to work the job fair and recruiting agency circuit.

Killing a Financial Budget - Easier Than You May Think

December 10th, 2009 by downlock

Have you ever noticed that the people with the least amount of money often have happier family lives, and more free time? It’s no coincidence that those with enough money to meet the necessities, but not enough to indulge in excess frivolity in life are often the less stressed, more content people around. Why? Because they’ve learned an important lesson: happiness isn’t about acquiring things.
Many newlyweds don’t find financial success for years down the road, yet they never seem as content once they’ve “made it” to the better neighborhood and the bigger house, as they did during those initial years of struggle. The more we have, the more stress we add to our lives and the more time we take away from our families. Houses take upkeep. Pools need to be cleaned. Big yards need to be mowed. Private schools need to be paid for, and every car you own needs to be maintained. Even the clothes spilling from your closet need to be washed, hung and put away. This all takes time, energy and money. Many are finding that the cost of ownership is becoming too high, both financially and emotionally, causing a backlash to today’s overindulgent way of life.
Simplicity is making a comeback, allowing overindulgence and debt to take a ride, for an easier and less stressful way of life. Becoming debt free isn’t as hard as it may seem. It just requires taking a good hard look at your life, setting new priorities and cutting out all the stuff that only manages to add stress and chaos to your life, for a more stable financial future. Some experts say that the average middle class American could cut their annual expenses in half by simply cutting out the excess waste in their budgets. If you marvel at that statistic, wondering if it could ever be possible to live on half of what you do now, consider how and what your family spends their money on. Now, consider these cost-cutting moves for a more cost-effective way of life:
Cut Out The Excess:
Movies, dinners, lattes, vending machine snacks, designer clothes, top-flight golf clubs; these are frivolous (yet enjoyable) things that the average middle-class American considers necessities. Free yourself from the baggage of excess debt and worry. Add up all the non-essential things and activities that your family spends money on throughout the year. The number may amaze you! Now, we’re not saying that you shouldn’t have any fun, or enjoy special activities. The key here is to choose carefully, and trim the excess. No one needs 20 pairs of jeans in their closet. Yet, we indulge in that sort of overindulgence on a regular basis for dozens of items. Our children do not need to be in basketball, gymnastics and voice lessons all at the same time. It’s exhausting and expensive.
Choose the ONE activity or club per season that means the most, and let the rest go. It isn’t just the cost of the excess activities that you’ll save, but the gas money it costs to run your children from place to place; the fast food you buy on busy nights; the fundraisers you won’t be participating in anymore; the cost of snacks during the event; among others. Begin simplifying your life and budget by first trimming the excess.
Make Substitutions:
From buying generic products at the supermarket, to camping at the beach instead of staying at a luxury hotel, substituting cheaper ways to buy and do things can all aid your quest for a simpler life and less financial distress. For many, the change may be drastic, while others will find it an enjoyable challenge to discover new ways to keep the same activities on less money.
Here are a few places to start:
-Rent new DVD’s instead of buying them. Better yet, borrow them from friends, family or the library. So you won’t see new releases the first week they come out, but does that really matter?
-Take the family out to dinner a little earlier. Early bird entrees can be as much as half the price, just by being seated at your favorite restaurant at 5 pm instead of 6 pm.
-Go on vacation during the off-season. Peak vacation times are more crowded and expensive. Instead of heading to the shore during the fourth of July, opt for the first week of June, or mid-September instead. The weather is still great; the hotels and restaurants are running killer specials; and the crowds are gone. The only things you may be missing out on are some of those expensive touristy attractions and trendy boardwalk stores. Go into town and purchase your souvenirs from a local shopkeeper instead.
-Use Coupons. They’re not just for groceries anymore. Many stores, restaurants and attractions offer wonderful coupon deals on services and products. Get the rugs in three rooms of your house shampooed for the price of 1 on Tuesdays; get your dry-cleaning done for half price on Thursdays; these are all great coupon deals that can help you save money with very little effort or change.
-Buy Gifts Throughout The Year. Whether it’s for Christmas, a birthday, or anniversary, watch the clearance racks for great gifts all year through. Almost every store, no matter how expensive — has end of season clearance sales where they discount everything from toys and games to fine jewelry and house wares anywhere from 50-80% in order to make room for new merchandise. Take advantage of these deep discounts to save hundreds on this year’s gift giving.
Never Pay Full Price:
Eventually, everything goes on sale - maybe even clearance! From food, shoes and luggage to clothes, sporting goods and candy, every store finds it necessary to move goods out to make room for new merchandise eventually, and offers the items on discount to do it. Never pay full price, and if you do out of necessity, keep your receipts. Many stores will pay you the difference if an item goes on sale within 30 days of your purchase with a sales receipt.
Buying used items is also another way to save big. High-end consignment shops are an excellent place to find good quality (and often brand new) merchandise at a fraction of the cost. Everyone buys things they never wear or use, and often try to get rid of them by consigning them at a local store.
Consider Some Drastic Changes:
Want to save the big bucks? You may be ready for some drastic changes in your life. Here are a few ways to save thousands every year:
-Downsize Your Home. Have you realized that 3,000 square feet of house is more than a family of 4 really needs? Is 3-acres of land too much to care for? It may be a good time to sell your home and buy a smaller one. Downsizing from a larger home to a more reasonable one can save you thousands on mortgage costs, utilities, upkeep, and more.
-Sell Your Car. Do you really need two or three cars? Once you begin to rid your family life of those excess activities and such, you may find it possible to either get rid of your second car, or sell it and pay cash for a used one instead.
-Get Rid of Anything That Costs You Money To Upkeep. Ditch the pool, the hot tub, the vacation home, boat, trailer, even your perfectly manicured lawn. Anything that costs money to maintain and/or upkeep can go.
-Ditch the Vacation. Stay home instead. Or take a few day trips in your area to save big bucks.
As you can see, living a simpler, less expensive life doesn’t have to mean giving up all the fun stuff. It does mean setting new priorities and finding new ways to achieve your goals without all the added expense.

Can Exercise Be Exorcised?

December 10th, 2009 by downlock

My conscience won’t go on vacation. I can slather it with sunscreen and lay it in the sun, I can buy it maps and take it sightseeing, I can dress it up and take it out for a romantic dinner - but it refuses to go on vacation.
While I’m trying to have fun, my conscience continually lectures me. Although I try to explain that a vacation is time to do and eat things you don’t at home, it won’t listen. My conscience nags me most about exercise. It insists I make time to exercise on vacation.
When I first started an exercise program, jump roping was my exercise of choice. Yes, it had its ups and downs; but I didn’t need coordinated outfits, rainy days didn’t dampen my spirits and I could exercise my mind at the same time by watching early morning news on television.
I switched to jogging to spend more time with my husband, but time together sucking for air and dripping with perspiration wasn’t exactly quality time. Nevertheless, I persevered.
I thought I was doing fine. I was jogging less and less slowly. In spite of that, my doctor insultingly diagnosed me with walking pneumonia. Walking became the only exercise my doctor allowed me. He also advised against heavy lifting, overdoing and overtiring. Basically, he advised against being a housewife and mother.
When my lungs finally cleared, my desire to jog didn’t - until a vacation in Florida. As I was taking a brisk, morning walk along the beach, people my parents’ age were jogging past me. Damn! I was bitten. No, it wasn’t one of the scurrying sand crabs that bit me. It was the jogging bug.
I started jogging again, but not with John. He jogged for speed. I jogged for endurance - a euphemism for my still being slow. I contentedly jogged for several years until I was slowed to a walk again - this time by back problems.
Although I was forced to become an energy conservationist and missed jogging, exercise continues to be a big part of my life. I’m constantly running errands; and when I forget my shopping list, I jog my memory.
Unfortunately, my conscience isn’t satisfied with that. It wants sixty minutes of bonafide exercise every day - either walking, practicing yoga or working out at the gym - even when I’m on vacation. Frankly, I think I have a fat, guilty conscience.

Road Rage Accidents - Driver Beware

December 10th, 2009 by downlock

Road rage, we have all heard the term. Some of us, if we are completely honest, might even be guilty of it ourselves. Honking the horn, making gestures or cutting in front of another driver. All are considered to be examples of road rage. Road rage is seldom out of the news. In a recent incident in California, a man was beaten unconscious with a piece of metal pipe, after a confrontation. The Department of Transportation estimates that nationwide, around 66% of all car accidents are at least partially caused by aggressive driving.
But how do you recognize road rage and what can you do to prevent it? The term road rage was coined by the media, but doctors actually have another name for the condition. Intermittent Explosive Disorder, as it is officially known, affects around 16 million people in the United States on a regular basis.
The symptoms: anger and impatience - often appear in childhood and many sufferers have drug or alcohol problems or other emotional issues which can bring on road rage. If you are the kind of person who could benefit from anger management classes. You may be likely to suffer from road rage.
Men are also far more likely to suffer from road rage than women and to actively seek a confrontation with another driver. Some surveys indicate that American drivers see road rage as a more serious problem than drunk driving.
A comprehensive study was recently undertaken by Autovantage, a Connecticut based auto club, to determine which parts of the country suffered most from road rage. Perhaps not surprisingly, the country’s largest cities have the most road rage: Miami, (which was the highest) New York, Boston, Washington DC and Los Angeles.
But surprisingly, the places with the lowest amount of road rage incidents are all fairly large cities too. The survey found that the least aggressive drivers could be found on the roads of Dallas, St Louis, Seattle, Pittsburgh and Portland, Oregon. So how can you deal with road rage; by others and yourself?
Firstly, try to drive safely and courteously yourself. Avoid speeding, switching lanes at the last minute and always use your indicator when appropriate. Don’t block the passing lane. This is actually a law in 20 states, but should be second nature anyway.
Reduce your own chance of road rage by always allowing enough time to get to your destination. Check local traffic conditions wherever possible. An increase in traffic congestion, which is largely beyond our control, is a contributing factor to a large number of road rage incidents.
Don’t drive if you are angry or depressed. Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Some surveys suggest that around 80% of motorists are angry while driving. However, even those drivers who are normally mild-mannered can succumb to road rage, if there is something to trigger it off.
Try to use the horn sparingly while driving. It should be used to communicate and not “punish”. If you are using high beams on headlights, you should switch them off when there is oncoming traffic. Don’t listen to music at a volume that might annoy other drivers. Keep other activities to a minimum while driving, such as cellphone use, reading a map or eating and drinking.
If another driver is driving aggressively, try to get out of their way - by slowing down if necessary. If someone behind you is speeding, get out of their lane if you safely can. Don’t be stubborn and make a point by staying where you are. Try to avoid eye contact with an aggressive driver.
Efforts are being made on a larger scale, as well. Various state law enforcement agencies are working with both The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to establish a number to call to report aggressive drivers. In the meantime, you are encouraged to report any incidents of road rage to the local police.
Many other states have various programs in place to address the problem. These measures include enforcing current laws more strictly, legislative action and public information campaigns. Campaigns have included press and TV infomercials, flyers and highway billboards.
But ultimately it’s up to all of us to help prevent road rage. By recognizing the signs in others and ourselves, we can significantly reduce road rage accidents and perhaps help save a life.

Real Estate Investment Trusts

December 7th, 2009 by downlock

Investment in real estate gives an opportunity to gain good profit for a lot of people. Since investing in a real estate is a great short or long term opportunity, the demands are increasing with each passing day. The price increases substantially over time and this is the main reason for the increasing demand.
There are several real-estate investment trusts that are used by people to invest in residential and commercial business of real estate. A group of people form a trust and a lot of mortgages and commercial properties are managed and possessed by them. Investments are made by the trust in several other real estates. These that invest in real estate show the characteristics of stocks and real estate.
A trust that invests in real-estate works like a company and produces income from real-estate like offices, apartments, shopping centers, hotels and warehouses. Though there are wide ranges of property types, most of the trusts that invest in real estate concentrate on just one of the property types. Those ‘trusts’ that are specialists in health care are known as health care real-estate investment trust.
A trust for investing in real-estate was formed in the early 60’s so that it could raise the investment opportunities in real-estate to a great extent. Small scale investors have the right of accessing these investment funds. The advantage of forming a trust is that a person can select a particular amount of share he wants to invest from various trusts instead of investing in a single management or building.
The trust that invest in real-estate can be broadly divided into three types. They are mortgage, equity and hybrid. Mortgage trusts that invest in real-estate offer direct money to the owners of real-estate by purchasing mortgage or loan backed securities. In case of equity trusts that invests in real-estate the management and the ownership is with the trust. The last category of trusts is a combination of the equity and mortgage trusts. The hybrid trusts that invest in real estate not only provide loans to the operators or owners of real estate but also own properties.
There are quite a few differences between trusts that invest in real-estate and limited partnerships. The main variation is that in case of investment trusts the annual tax information should be provided to the investors. However in case of limited partnerships there is no need to provide for the tax information. The second difference is that in case of limited partnerships there is a limit to the amount that can be invested.
However there is no limit to the amount that can be invested by an investment trust. In case a company desires to be a trust that invests in real-estate, the company is bound to share more than 90 percent of the income that is generated and is taxable to all the shareholders at least once a year. When a company is recognized as a trust investing in real estate the dividends that are provided to the share holders can be reduced.

How To Stay Motivated To Achieve Your Goals

December 7th, 2009 by downlock

With so many distractions in our midst, with so many excuses and reasons to quit, how do you stay motivated to achieve your goals?
Staying motivated will help ensure your success in life; it will help ensure that you accomplish your goal of improving yourself.
It is important to remember that all work and no play is not the way to live one’s life.
Balance is the key to anything.
When one focuses too much on one avenue in life, all can go to the wayside in another part of one’s life.
The imbalance can cause one to feel pressure and stressed, feeling as though giving up would help more than persevering.
This is why finding ways to avoid this and stay motivated is imperative.
Give yourself rewards.
Take the time to reward yourself for your hard work and achievements.
If no one else is there to do it for you, be your best fan, your biggest supporter and your best friend.
Reward yourself with things that will refresh your spirits and keep your positive energy high.
More helpful techniques.
In addition to a reward system there are many other techniques that can help you in your efforts to stay motivated.
Let your imagination go.
Think of the things that you say and do all day long to motivate yourself to go to work, to clean your home, to do just about anything.
You already have the motivating skill inside of you; it pushed you to read this article!
You just need to exercise this skill, practice it until you no longer have to think about it.
In addition some ideas that can help you motivate yourself follow:
Remind yourself of the final reward.
Motivate others! When you do this, it reinforces the skill to motivate yourself! Praise yourself.
It is not easy to take on big risks, this in and of itself is praiseworthy!
It is a brave, brave move that some people wish they could do, live their whole life but never do so out of fear.

A Bird’s-Eye View of Biotech Jobs

December 7th, 2009 by downlock

The term “biotech,” short for “biotechnology,” refers to the application and manipulation of biological resources to develop products and processes that fulfill industrial and other human objectives. While popular imagination tends to latch onto controversial fields of biotechnological research like DNA typing, cloning, and stem cell research, the fact is that biotechnology has commonplace applications ranging from bread production to wastewater recycling that influence our daily lives. The consequence of this wide reach of biotechnology is that the number biotech jobs continues to grow faster than the numbers of jobs in other sectors.
The Divisions of Biotech
A great number of industries are directly influenced by biotechnology, and it would be difficult to mention all of them in a short article. However, to provide a broader perspective, jobs in biotechnology can be grouped into three functional categories:
Research and development: Considered by some to be the most prestigious division of biotech research and development (R&D) creates the frontiers of biotechnology and sets the paradigms that influence both humanity and the biotech job market. The three major divisions of biotechnological R&D are research for discoveries, veterinary sciences, and bioinformatics. Jobs in this sector are usually reserved for life scientists.
Clinical research and safety: Once a functional process or product is developed by R&D, the necessity to establish trials to determine the impact of the product or process on public health and safety emerges. Biotechnologists working in this field ensure the safety of biotechnological products and processes.
Compliance: Issues of compliance with respect to biotechnological products and processes—in terms of both quality and standards and rules established by the
state—create openings for biotechnologists.
Openings for biotechnologists are also available in the following specific areas and functional fields:
Medicine and Pharmaceuticals
In this broad field, the following functional areas need biotechnologists:
genetics, including medical genetics, genetic counseling, and genetic nursing
organ transplantation, reproduction, and regenerative medicine
public health and safety, which includes projects ranging from vaccine development to wastewater treatment by bacterial colonies
gene testing and genetic therapy
Agriculture
Under the broad heading of agriculture, the following functional areas rely on the application of biotechnology and consequently are the areas where biotech jobs are to be found:
development of genetically modified variations of plants and seeds development of biological pesticides and nutrition identification and protection of endangered
species, including artificial breeding verification and authentication of costly food products
Bioinformatics
Under this broad heading come:
computational biology
supercomputing
statistical and actuarial functions
data analysis, data transfer, database creation, and other data-related functions
Law
With the rise in the use of biotechnology, openings for biotechnologists have also opened up in the legal field. Openings are principally located in the following functional areas:
patent specialties and litigation
academia
ethical, social, and legal issues
forensic sciences, including gene testing for identification purposes
Guided Missile Development and Space Technology
Biotechnologists are required in organizations engaged in manufacturing guided missiles and space vehicles. Functional areas include:
creation of closed artificial environments
creation of life-supporting equipment and systems
research into the effects of space on biological systems
cybernetics
Engineering
There are many opportunities for biotechnologists in the field of engineering. Biotechnologists working in this area may be involved in:
designing bioprocessing containers and equipment
creating new energy sources such as biofuels
biomedical engineering
Education
Obviously a need for biotechnologists who can teach will always exist. Types of opportunities available in biotechnological education reflect the needs of universities and traditional academic structure.
Besides the above fields, there are myriad other divisions of applied biotechnology, including life-science research, anthropology, history, military, bio-science communication, and chemical manufacturing.
Biotech Job Designations
Biotech job designations are as varied as the fields in which biotechnology finds application. Though designations can reflect the imagination of the employer, some standard, industry-recognized designations that are related to biotechnology or the application of biotechnical knowledge are veterinary assistant, veterinarian, technician, technologist, chemist, pharmacologist, laboratory technician, chemical technician, engineer, computer system analyst, health service worker, physician, biological scientist, biotechnologist, and agricultural technician. One’s designation depends on the organization, industry, and sector in which he or she works, and job designations can be superficially misleading.
