Antique furniture - The Victorian period

November 6th, 2009 by downlock

Ok, if i say you antique furniture you understand that i am NOT going to talk about the very early furniture used for humans thousands of years ago. I am going to talk about the antique furniture used in the civilization.
One of the best and finest styles to talk about inside the antique furniture field is the Victorian. The Victorian antique furniture style can be divided in three periods: Early Victorian, Mid Victorian and Late Victorian. The Early Victorian, is about the furniture made between 1830 and 1850, was a mix of very styles: Charles X, neoclassical and a variation of Regency. Also was going a revival of Gothic and Rococo styles by some manufacturers with their rising usage of machines.
The Mid Victorian was essentially the “founded” by the Great Exhibiton at Crystal Palce, which joined manufacturers and designers from all Europe in the year of 1851. This exhibition generated an explotion on new styles and mixes of them. Also started the Napolen 3 style, a semi-revival of medieval ideas by people as Burgess, talbert and one of the most important: Morris.
The Late Victorian was about reproductions of european historic types, but also we have the Arts and Crafts movement by people as Ashbee, Mackintosh or Voysey introducing something closer to art nouveau, always considered the early of this period.

All about Domain Names and Web Hosting

November 6th, 2009 by downlock

In this article, you will find out all the basic things there are to know about a domain name and about web hosting. This will help you understand what a domain name really represents, what web hosting is and so many other useful things that will help you understand these terms a better.
Actually, domain name is a term with multiple meanings. This term can be the name that identifies a computer or even a computer on the internet (URL). In addition, it has a similar meaning to registered domain names or to domain name system. However, the term is also used incorrectly as a website address.
Let us talk a bit more about the classic meaning of the term. The name that identifies your computer is called the IP (internet protocol). The serial number that your computer receives is unique and you can be sure that no one else has the exact IP as you do. The IP address is like your social security number. It is used to identify you and no one has the same number as you do.
Also, you should know that there are certain domain levels that you have to consider when naming the site. There are 3 most important domain levels: generic, country code and infrastructure (it is a little domain comparison). The generic levels are the ones you see surfing the web. Here are some examples: “.com” is usually used by commercial organizations and it is available to the public. Also available to the public are: .net, which is used by sites related to the internet, .org used for non profit organizations and many more.
The country code domains are usually used for describing a designated country (an example that you may all have heard about, I’m sure, is: .uk). Last but not least, the infrastructure domains are the ones used by the government agencies. This domain comparison is easy and very useful for all of us. Now, when you will see .com, you will know all about it.
Now, let us talk a bit about web hosting. First, we should clarify what web hosting really is. Well, you should think about web hosting as renting the spot for your site on the net. Trough the web hosting service, you are allowed to create your site and share it with the world. It will take care of your site and you are not obliged by the web hosting companies to create a site like they want to; you have total freedom.
Also, you should know that choosing the perfect web hosting company for you is a bit hard, but very important. Web hosting reviews can help you do that. By reading as many reviews as you can, you can form your opinion about one host or another. In addition, what you must know is that web hosting also means that you will have to spend some money on it.
Overall, I believe that with this information you can have an idea of what web hosting is and also understand the term of domain name.

Buttercream; Queen of Icings!

November 6th, 2009 by downlock

Luscious buttercream has been dubbed the queen of icings by many a cake decorator, and if you have ever played chess, you’ll appreciate the analogy.
This makes it well worth your while to learn how to make great tasting and performing buttercream. You will find you can use it to fill and cover a cake (providing a canvas for all sorts of decorative work), pipe decorative borders, and make icing flowers and other decorations. Buttercream can even be rolled like fondant.
You will find many varieties of buttercream, including crusting and non-crusting, strawberry (made with fresh strawberries is best!), buttery buttercreams and snow-white, dairy-free buttercreams. Crusting buttercream dries to a semi-hard consistency, but not cement hard like royal icing. And, crusting or soft, buttercream tastes wonderful. Those who prefer a less sugary icing can use a less-sweet-buttercream recipe.
If you’ve ever made a wedding cake, you already understand the need to turn out a velvety, fondant-like buttercream icing.
As any cake decorator will tell you, producing a creamy buttercream icing and then smoothing it to a wrinkle and crack free surface on your cake can be tricky.
No worries. There are some tried and true techniques that will help you to consistently produce smooth buttercream icing with each new cake.
One of our favorites is the “Paper Towel Method”. This works only with crusting buttercream. One you’ve iced your cake, allow your buttercream to sit for about 15 minutes, allowing it to form a crust.
Use a smooth paper towel (such as Viva) for this method. Also be sure the paper towel is white so there’s no risk of color’s bleeding onto you cake.
Step 1. Press the clean, dry paper towel onto the surface of your cake with the goal of pressing out any wrinkles in the frosting.
Step 2. With the palm of your hand flat on the paper towel, gently glide the towel in a circular motion. The natural heat from your hand help’s smooth the frosting under the towel.
Step 3. Continue to gently glide the paper towel and press out bumps and wrinkles on the entire surface of your cake until the surface is perfectly or near perfectly smooth.
And to give you a great buttercream to try this out with, here’s one of our favorite buttercream recipes.
1 cup vegetable shortening
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon of clear vanilla flavor
1 teaspoon of creme bouquet flavoring (optional)
1/4 cup milk or water (add more as needed or for thinner consistency)
1 pinch salt (if using unsalted butter)
1 teaspoon meringue powder
2 pounds of sifted powdered sugar
Mix the shortening and butter until well blended. Add milk/water and flavoring and continue mixing.
Once well combined, turn the mixer off. Add salt, meringue powder and sugar. Adjust mixer’s setting to the lowest speed, and mix just until the ingredients start to come together.
Then on medium speed and mix for 2 - 5 minutes until smooth and a little fluffy (time will vary depending on the power of your mixer). A stand mixer will require about 2 minutes, while a hand mixer will require 5 minutes or more.
If the icing is too stiff and you can tell the mixer is straining, add more liquid to obtain the right consistency. If it becomes too soft, add more powdered
sugar.
Tips for Perfect Buttercream
-If using a stand-up mixer, use the paddle attachment, NOT the whip.
-When using unsalted butter, add a little dash of salt to cut the sweetness.
- Meringue powder helps make your buttercream lighter and fluffier, which helps flowers hold their shape when you pipe them.
-Always use name brand shortening. Because it has more emulsifiers, it blends better and will not give you that “greasy” taste.
- For snow-white and dairy-free buttercream, replace the butter with shortening and add 1 tsp. clear, butter flavoring.
- Smooth the sides of your buttercream iced cake with a fondant smoother or bench scraper by holding either tool to the side and slowly spinning the cake on the turntable.
Here’s one more tip for making buttercream icing. Sometimes the buttercream in your mixing bowl will develop waves or bumps. This usually means your icing is too thick. No problem. A small amount of corn syrup to the icing will thin the buttercream.

The Pros & Cons Of Operating A Chain Restaurant

November 6th, 2009 by downlock

There are plenty of well known franchise restaurants out there that people frequent when they travel. They know exactly what they are going to get when they walk into the door. This is a comfort zone that many people get into because food is very important. No one wants to pay money for a meal that they didn’t find to be satisfying. Since franchise restaurants are so appealing to consumers, you can be sure they are appealing from the prospective of a business owner as well. Is a restaurant franchise right for you?
There are some pros and cons to operating a chain restaurant that you really need to be aware of before you make the decision. The reputation of the entire chain is going to affect your business. This can be a good thing because you may be able to open the doors and people are going to rush in steadily. They already know what you have to offer so you don’t have to work hard to get them in the door. You still have to offer quality food and service though to keep them coming back.
Yet not all of the publicity that comes from franchise restaurants is positive. I am sure you have heard plenty of stories in the news and online lately. Such incidents are quite isolated but they still have a huge impact on all of the franchise locations. It takes time to regain the trust of consumers. In the mean time you may have to struggle with the fact that your business revenue has decreased substantially. Give it time though and the incident will likely pass.
Many people are afraid to start their own business because they have read plenty of material that tells then more than half fail. While these statistics are true, don’t let them prevent you from following your dreams. That statistic also means that half of them didn’t fail - and you have a good chance of being in that group since you are carefully doing research instead of jumping in right away.
With a chain restaurant, you will get plenty of guidance and training. They will make sure you have all the key elements you need to be a successful business owner. You may find this to offer you the encouragement you need to move forward with opening your own business. Keep in mind that your individuality will be limited with this type of business operation though.
You may find that to get into a franchise restaurant you have to come up with thousands of dollars. The specifics will depend on the type of franchise you are interested in. There is also the reality that they may not approve you to start up a franchise. They may not feel that you are qualified or that it is a good location. There is security in a franchise restaurant though as fewer of them fail than independent restaurants.
Take some time to talk to other owner’s of chain restaurants. Find out what they like and don’t like about the business. You can even find some of this information online at various sites including blogs and forums. Look for consistent themes so you can identify issues that you will need to address that relate to you and owning a chain restaurant.
Operating a franchise restaurant works well for some people but not for others. This isn’t something you can jump into and then easily get out of. Therefore you really need to do your homework in advance. Don’t get caught up in the image of the franchise restaurant that you know. Dig deeper to find out what is going on behind the scenes. You will likely only get one shot at a successful restaurant whether it is a franchise or not. Take your time to make it a very successful restaurant.

For many people the next logical step after you have got your PSP is to download free full game PSP format. The search then begins to fins a safe and secure online site to download free games. This search may take weeks or even months for those who do not have any prior knowledge as to where they can get access and download free full game PSP format. Step 1 to download free full game PSP format
The first step is to find a site that is safe and secure. There are several sites that allow download free full game PSP format if you have ever checked out these sites you would soon realize that none of these which have a lot of advertisements and do a lot of publicity of the services that they provide do not really have full games for downloading. They probably have a game or two to download that too really old ones or else after downloading you find out that what you have downloaded is not what you actually want. Once you make a download from any of these sites then the catch of payment would come up and they would ask for the credit card number and other details. Many of these sites do not want a one time fee but require the person to pay a monthly subscription. It is not advisable to give details regarding your credit card to such sites which are just not truthful and have hidden costs which are not mentioned and in fact they trick you into it.

Laurie Larsons Aquila a Hidden Gem that Needs Discovery

November 2nd, 2009 by downlock

I recently purchased Aquila at CD Baby after reading a press release about Laurie Larsons latest CD. The 10 song compilation may be one of my best purchases in the last two years. On the whole the album features the amazing vocal styling of an artist obviously influenced by the music of the 60s. Yet there is something modern and compelling about both the sound of the music and Ms. Larsons vocals. Within each song lies a well crafted and produced performance that validates the singers pedigree and many talents.
Some of my favorite songs include My Time Will Arrive which has a bluesy, 60ish feel to it and Architect of Dreams a more spiritual song with haunting vocals that linger in your head long after the song is over. Road to Elysium is a very beautiful song with Ms. Larsons best vocals. I am particularly fond of the end of the song which features an a cappella vocal that is by far the best display of Mr. Larsons amazing vocal talent.
My favorite song on the CD is On This Day which not only features an amazing vocal performance but also a very tasteful guitar solo, that demonstrates the talent of the musicians that perform with Ms. Larson on Aquila.
The song Aquila is a bit pop, a bit reggae and a lot of fun. Mr. Larson combines her vocals with an augmented almost hip hop vocal accompaniment. Add to that some killer guitar playing and you have a fun sound that stands out on the CD.
Utopia features more great vocals and excellent finger style guitar playing. This highlights an important part of the production on Aquila the musicianship is truly first class, always adding to the vocal performance without over whelming it.
Child of the Wind is another favorite of mine. Ms. Larson captures the essences of a young girl, and her struggles to make the right choices. I relate to this song, because I have a young teenage daughter, and every time I hear the song it reminds me of her.
Light of Freedom and Center of Light are also well crafted songs. As are all the songs on this CD. It is no surprise that Ms. Larson is starting to receive strong radio play across the country. Each song is well crafted and very listenable. The best quality of Aquila is that you believe what Ms. Larson is singing. The lyrics are very personal and you know they are important to the singer. Nothing contrived or forced.
Is Aquila a folk rock, classic rock, or alternative rock CD? Honestly you cannot categorize Aquila or Mr. Larsons debut CD Artist Mirage in such simple terms, as her music truly cross many boundaries. And that is what I find so appealing about her music.
Aquila is a self produced and self promoted effort, but it is professionally recorded and the songs are complete performances. Most self produced albums simply do not have the quality and production to be worthy of distribution. Laurie Larsons Aquila is an exception to that rule, and is a hidden gem that needs discovery.

The Master Muscle of Your Body is Your Brain

November 2nd, 2009 by downlock

The human brain is incredibly active. It’s constantly monitoring, adjusting and repairing the physical body to facilitate optimum performance. This massive activity gives rise to the mind that according to research produces over 60.000 thoughts every day. It is constantly busy associating, sensing, perceiving, retrieving and storing data to keep you on top of your game in a competitive and challenging world.
One of the reasons it’s so difficult for many people to focus and concentrate for long periods is this constant mental activity.
It’s hard to focus and concentrate when your thoughts and emotions are constantly interfering with our attention, but the brain and mind are wired this way and it’s completely normal.
Researchers have been telling us for years that the brain is a lot like a muscle. It behaves like a regular muscle when you exercise it. Specific mental exercises improve mental performance in specific areas of the brain.
It may seem strange to think of the brain as a muscle, especially when its main purpose is to store memories and enable thinking. But when you start exercising it rigorously you’ll discover just that. You’ll be able to do more with your mind than you ever thought possible, just as you would be physically stronger after regular physical exercise.
According to Craig Ramey of the University of Alabama the brain and education are almost synonymous. When learning new skills we rehearse again and again until we master it. If we don’t practice new skills, they fade a way. The phrase “if you don’t use it you lose it” is as true for mental skills as it is for muscles.
Brain plasticity is the brain’s natural lifelong capacity for physical and functional change. Basically it is the mechanism that allows the brain to be molded or changed by learning and experience. Research has revealed that this ability to re-generate and re-structure brain cells is active throughout our life.
Mental exercise, scientists are finding, causes physical changes in the brain, strengthening connections between brain cells called synapses and actually building new connections. Such physical changes can occur within seconds, as when we shift attention, or they may take hours or days, as some memories are cast into the biological ingots that last a lifetime.
You can develop specific abilities just by practicing certain exercises that affect the areas of your brain where these abilities reside. Scientists have already created programs for learning-disabled children by using this technology.
The areas of your brain that you use the most grow stronger over time and get more ingrained, fixed and habitual as the years go by. In effect you become more of the same.
When you use your mind rigorously, the brain grows new dendrites. These are the thin branch-like structures that stimulate and carry information between brain cells. If you work hard on solving logical problems, language and math, you grow dendrites in your left-brain and it gets more connected and becomes more powerful. If you work on solving abstract problems, spatial and emotional you develop your right brain and it grows to become more powerful. If you work hard on solving future related problems, multitasking, planning ahead, prospective memory, meta-cognitive tasks you develop your frontal lobes.
To exercise your body you go to the gym where you have specially made equipment to exercise and train specific muscles. The same goes for your brain. To exercise your brain you use “mental weights” to exercise and train the specific mental muscles you want to develop and make stronger.

President Gul of Turkey - An Islamist in Disguise ?

November 2nd, 2009 by downlock

The election of Abdullah Gul as President of Turkey on 28 August 2007 is controversial because of his Islamic background. Now that both the Prime Minister and President have religious backgrounds, his election is widely viewed as a threat to the secular ethos of the Turkish State.
Although Mr Gul, in his accession speech, pledged allegiance to the secular constitution and the legacy of Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, there are many who view such commitments as cosmetic.
Mr Gull entered parliament in 1991 as a member of the Welfare Party. This was a pro Islamic party which ruled in 1996, until it was forced out of power by the military. The reason for the intervention of the army was that the party was failing to respect the secular values enshrined in the constitution. Leaders of the party were banned from political office for several years.
Mr Gul reappeared in 1999 as a member of the Virtue Party. This party was also closed down in 2001, for the same reason. However, there was not a disqualification order and Mr Gul was instrumental in founding the Justice and Development Party (AKP). This party won a significant electoral victory in 2002, and has remained in power since then.
The fact that Mrs Gul wears a headscarf in public may seem a barely relevant point to many international observers, but it is deeply significant in Turkey. This is because Turkish women are forbidden to wear headscarves at school, university and in government. Women lawyers are also forbidden to wear headscarves in Court.
This is the legacy of Ataturk who considered Islam part of the Ottoman tradition which he and his followers were dedicated to eradicating from Turkish society. The secular nature of the Turkish state is safeguarded by the Constitution of 1982.
The Turkish establishment, including the military, are deeply committed to the secular ethos. However, they are perceived by many ordinary Turks as out of step with contemporary trends such as economic liberalism and social mobility within Turkish society.
The AKP party reflects the growing aspirations of many Turks for improved standards of living and a pro EU stance, and they compare Turkey’s economic performance in recent years with the periods of stagnation and inflation of the post war period.
Mr Gul became president at his second attempt, the first being blocked by the military in May which forced a general election. The AKP were returned to power with an increased majority and the military have not, as yet, intervened.
The newly appointed president’s wife, Mrs Gul, was notable by her absence at the Victory Day festivities which celebrate the victory of Dumlupinar, the final battle in the Turkish War of Independence of 1922, as she was not invited by the military. The military have a longstanding practice of not inviting the wives of AKP politicians who wear headscarves to civic events.
It is important to recognise the fragility of democracy in Turkey. The military have ousted four governments since 1960, and their complaints should not be taken lightly.
Mr Gul and the AKP need to tread very carefully during the early months of his presidency, due to the risk of military intervention. One way he could defuse the tension between the government and the army would be to accede to the military’s desire to take a harder line against the Kurdish Peoples Party (PKK) insurgents in eastern Turkey and to allow the military to strike at their bases in Northern Iraq.
Kurds have been flocking into Kirkuk in anticipation of a referendum which could grant a measure of devolved power to a relatively autonomous Kurdistan. In addition to the dimension of terrorism, the area is rich in oil and therefore has major strategic importance.
Mr Gul’s avowal of secular values is considered a sham by many commentators who point to his Islamic political past. However, it should be noted that many politicians modify their views during the course of their careers.
In the UK, the transformation of the Labour party from an organisation committed to state ownership of major industries and pacifism to a liberal, market oriented economy party is astounding. The fact that the party leaders embraced a bellicose foreign policy with respect to Afghanistan and Iraq provides an example of how politicians can radically change their policies.
Although opportunist politicians change their policies in response to public opinion, and the UK Labour Party is a prime example of this, one can question whether such an analysis holds in respect of religious beliefs. Contemporary events in the middle east indicate that Islam is a matter of deep conviction and not simply political convenience.
On this view, one could argue that it is only a matter of time before the AKP and President Gul adopt a more Islamic tone. This would have significant implications for NATO, of which Turkey is a member, and for Turkey’s relations with Israel, which are currently cordial. It would not bode well for Turkey’s accession into the EU.

Beware: Wholesale Playstation 3 Price Scams

November 2nd, 2009 by downlock

It is impossible to get a brand new and virtually not touched PlayStation 3 at a real wholesale price, despite what many scammers would have you believe- if wholesale is to be consider 50-90% of the current retail value of the first 2 years of life of the item. If you try to get a PlayStation 3 in this way, the best scenario is that you will most likely get it slightly cheaper than the retail price, but with a lot more hassle and worry.
The worst case is that you might not get your PlayStation 3, and some unscrupulous crook will get your money the easy way. Beware of early sign of supposed wholesale for Playstation 3.
Why? The first answer is simple market economics. The reason wholesale prices get to be low is because of the cost of dealing with individual customers. Any company, which is selling to individuals, will have to encounter these higher costs, and so will not be able to offer wholesale prices in the most likely events. The why of that is simple? Yes indeed, the majority of the wholesalers and distributors play the game of bulk, and only a few get to do business in single these days. These are the facts, but such kind of distributors and wholesalers are still available.
The second reason is the shortage of units of the PlayStation 3. Sony manufacturing center in Japan and China have been unable to produce enough units to flood the market at launch. Anybody who does have access to a wholesale PlayStation 3 has a strong incentive to sell on to a retailer, who will be able to get a good price for them. Finally, Sony exerts control over the pricing of the PlayStation 3 in the US market, as things are slightly different in Japan, where retailers are allowed to set their own prices. They have the legal and economic power to ensure that the PlayStation 3 is sold only for the official prices - that is, $499 for the standard version, and $599 for the premium version.
So, what are all these outlets offering the PlayStation 3 at wholesale prices? Mostly, it is just a marketing gimmick. Some of them may really be wholesalers who are trying to break their agreement with Sony and sell the PlayStation 3 direct to customers. If that is the case, they are likely to be in legal trouble fairly soon, and they are not good people to be trusted with your money as you could also be in headaches as a buyer of such possible scam.
Where do you go if you cannot get the PlayStation 3 at wholesale prices? Look for hidden distributors like most eBay power sellers and online powerhouses do. People who devote their time to wholesale businesses spend countless hours searching for such hidden distributors and single unit sales with such sources. Their prices might seem a lot higher than those of the wholesalers, but in fact some will probably be offering bundles that give you good value for your money most of the time.
You will probably be looking to get extra games and controllers anyway, so why not let shops include them in the package for you? That is the way to get your PlayStation 3, not through the wholesale 50-80% discount scam. For people who breathe and live the wholesale tangible sell- at least for now, it would be impossible to find real wholesale Playstation 3 in brand new conditions and definitely in my 7 years of experience online and with my disclaimer point of view that is, importantly.

Ebay - A Gentle Giant?

November 2nd, 2009 by downlock

Today, eBay is a $4 billion company with a $60 billion market cap. Ebay is a huge market place and the possibilities are limitless. That`s why eBay is an addiction so hard to get rid of. However, it is important to remember that eBay is not the ‘be all and end all’. There is a much bigger online world out there.
For a growing number of entrepreneurs, though, eBay is their sole storefront. Believe it or not, eBay is the best opportunity you can use right now to make money online in the drop shipping business from the comfort of your own home. Selling items on eBay is simple and fun.
To begin selling on eBay, you will need to register and then create a seller`s account. When selling on eBay, your listing title can make or break the success of your auction. When I started selling on eBay, I would have loved to sit down with somebody and have that person teach me everything.
For me, selling online is a popular way to make money. The reality is that buying and selling on eBay is not that difficult, but it does demand a savvy “buyer beware” attitude, and a forthright attitude of honesty. It is very important to know that there are some items that sellers are prohibited from selling on ebay. You can check eBay`s terms for details of exactly what you can and can`t sell.
Online Auctions are going through a new phase. With literally millions of auctions taking place on ebay, good tools are essential. Where is the magic system that works, and shows how to make money on online auctions like ebay? There are a huge array of tools for searching online auctions, auction news and eBay auctions. Just do a search on Google and you will see what I mean.
In recent years, a significant number of individuals, small and medium companies, and Fortune 500 business have used eBay to build or complement their businesses. The business side of developing a compelling business around eBay can be overwhelming. There are many reasons why you should join the millions of Americans who have already discovered the freedom, flexibility, and potential fortune of doing business on eBay.
The first step for buying and selling on eBay is to register as an eBay member. Registering to sell on eBay is pretty straightforward. I have long held the position that eBay is two things, an online auction, and a potential addiction. Keep in mind, though, that the purpose of eBay is to sell merchandise to buyers. I have to warn you though that selling on eBay can become an addiction.
Ebay is definitely MY new addiction.
